Introduction

Are you missing one or more teeth and looking for a temporary tooth replacement option? If so, you may want to consider a solution known as a dental flipper tooth. In this article, I'll explain what a dental flipper tooth is and how it works. I'll also cover the benefits and drawbacks of using a dental flipper as temporary solution for missing teeth.

What Exactly Is A Dental Flipper?

A dental flipper, also known as one tooth flipper, is a temporary denture used to replace a missing tooth. It’s a common short-term solution for patients waiting on a permanent replacement, such as a dental implant or traditional dentures. Flippers offer a quick, convenient, and affordable way to restore your smile quickly after unexpected tooth loss.

How Does A Dental Flipper Work?

Dental Flippers are made mainly with an acrylic material that houses the tooth and provides the clasps used to connect the flipper to your natural teeth. Because the flipper is a detachable prosthetic, it can be used until a more permanent solution is ready. Like dentures, the shape and colour of the dental flipper can be custom designed by your denturist to match the shape and colour of your natural teeth. Dental Flipper Process

The easiest and fastest way to get a dental flipper is to contact a local denture clinic near you.

Generally speaking, replacing your missing tooth is a 3 step process that takes a minimum of 1 hour.

01

The Consultation

The first step is to visit you local denture clinic for a free consultation. During the consultation, your denturist will examine your gums and the surrounding teeth. If your gums and surrounding teeth are strong enough to support a flipper, you are eligible for treatment.

02

Flipper Preparation

In most cases, the dental flipper can be prepared and ready for the first fitting in a couple of hours.

03

Fitting and Adjustments

Once the flipper is ready, your denturist will fit the denture in your mouth. At this stage you'll be able to test it for comfort, stability. If adjustments are required, they can be made in just a few minutes.

Dental Flipper FAQs

Are dental flippers covered by insurance in Ontario?
Yes, a flipper is covered if you have insurance through your employer. Flippers are not covered under the CDCP.
Do flipper teeth look natural?
Flippers look completely natural. Everything from the shape, size and colour can be matched with your surrounding teeth.
What's the difference between a dental flipper and a partial denture?
A partial denture is meant for permanent use. A flipper is meant as a temporary solution until a partial denture or implant can be implemented.
Can I eat normally with a flipper tooth?
Yes, you'll be able to chew food normally. Your flipper will not move or come loose while eating most meals. Additionally, you do not need to worry about biting down too hard on certain foods like apples or meat.
Can I sleep with my dental flipper in my mouth?
It's possible but not recommended. Ideally, patients should remove their flipper at night. This will allow the gums to breathe and recover from the pressure exerted on the gums during the day.
How long do I need to wait after a tooth extraction to wear my flipper?
This depends on the patient. Most patients can wear their flipper the same day as their extraction while other patients may need a day or two for the tissue around the extraction site to recover.
