What Are Complete Dentures?

A complete denture, (also known as full dentures) is a removable device that can be used to replace an entire upper or lower row of teeth.

What Are the Benefits?

Complete dentures offer many benefits to patients who have lost the majority of their natural teeth including:
Affordability - complete dentures are the most cost effective option
Aesthetics - it's easy to achieve an ideal smile
Communication - improved ability to speak more clearly
Eating - dentures improve bite force and ability to chew a variety of foods
Appearance - maintain a more youthful appearance
Self esteem - achieve a more confident smile

What Are the Disadvantages?

Generally speaking, complete dentures are the most affordable and effective full tooth replacement option available. However, like with any solution, there are few downsides that every patient should be aware of including:
Occasional maintenance and repairs
Loss of bone in the jaw
Requires adhesives or paste to stay in place
Can sometimes slip when eating or speaking

What Are The Different Types of Dentures?

Complete Dentures

Complete denture treatment involves having all of your natural teeth removed at least eight weeks before your denture is fitted. This enables your denture to fit precisely by allowing your gums sufficient time to heal from the extraction process. And while this is an incredibly accurate procedure, it does mean patients must live without teeth for about 8 weeks.

Advantages

  • Most precise and stable - allowing time to heal from dental extractions ensures the teeth are in a stable state before fitting the denture

Disadvantages

  • Inconvenience - patients opting for complete denture treatment must live without their teeth for approximately 8 weeks

Immediate Dentures

With immediate dentures, only the teeth behind your canines are removed so that you can continue to talk, smile, and laugh as you normally would. Once the extractions behind the canines heal (about 8 weeks), the remaining teeth are removed and a temporary denture is placed. Finally, once the entire mouth has healed, the temporary denture is replaced by a permanent denture that is intended to be used for several years.

Advantages

  • Convenience - immediate denture patients do not need to go without teeth at any point while completing treatment

Disadvantages

  • Fit and stability - immediate dentures patients typically experience fit and stability issues for several months as their gums and jaw change shape throughout the healing process
  • Adjustment - due to the fit and stability issues noted above, most patients will need to see their Denturist for adjustments

Implant Supported Over-Dentures

For unmatched stability, some patients may opt for an implant supported overdenture. Unlike traditional complete or immediate dentures which can move during eating or speaking, an implant supported over-denture is tightly secured to the jaw via surgically placed titanium implants.
