Written By Meri Paparisto, DD on Oct 28, 2024

Introduction

If you've recently experienced tooth loss due to periodontal disease, cavities, trauma, or other health-related issues, we are here to assist you! The anxiety of being left without teeth can be overwhelming, but there's no need to worry. Thanks to the advancement of Immediate Dentures, you can obtain a new set of teeth on the very day your teeth are extracted.

What are Immediate Dentures, and How Soon Can I Have Them?

Immediate dentures are a custom made, temporary denture that you can wear out of the dentists office the same day your teeth are extracted.

Why Can’t I Have Permanent Dentures Immediately?

When failing teeth are removed, the surface area around your gums and jawbone need time to heal. During this healing process, the shape of your mouth will change. Because of this, we can only create your permanent dentures when your gums have fully healed. To provide patients with functional teeth in the shorter-term, a highly adjustable temporary denture is used. Because they are made of a softer and more pliable material, the temporary denture can be periodically adjusted as the shape of your mouth changes.

What Is The Entire Process?

When it comes to the process of getting an immediate denture, the fact is, every patient is different. That said, generally speaking, the process of going from extraction to temporary denture, to permanent denture typically looks like this:

Step 1: Schedule a Consultation

Like we said, every patient is different, so the first step is to book a consultation. Booking a consultation is the best way to get a personalized treatment plan that best meets your unique needs, budget, timeline etc. Unlike most denture clinics, Twogether Dentures provides patients access to an on-site dentist, Dr. Iliana Paparisto. Having an on-site dentist isn't just convenient, it also ensure's close collaboration between the Dentist and the Denturist.

Step 2: Tooth Extraction and Denture Preparation

The next step in the process is to remove the failing teeth. During this step, Dr. Paparisto will carefully remove each tooth. While this step may sound daunting, the truth is, most patients feel no pain during the process. To manage any post extraction pain, most patients find over the counter pain medications sufficient.

Following the extraction process, a precise dental impression of your mouth will be taken to create an accurate model of your mouth. This model is then customized by our Denturist to create your immediate denture. At Twogether Dentures, our Denturist Meri Paparisto creates every denture on-site in her in-house lab. Working twogether, Dr. Iliana and Meri collaborate to ensure your denture is the right shape, size, and shade for a look that's natural and comfortable.

Step 3: Fitting Your Denture

When your immediate denture is ready, the next step is the fitting. During this step, your new denture will be placed in the mouth and adjusted to ensure a stable fit that allows you to speak clearly and comfortably.

Step 4: The Healing Phase

In the days and weeks following the extraction procedure, it can take a while to get used to your immediate denture. Fortunately, Dr. Iliana and Meri are always available to make the transition as easy as possible. As you go through the healing process, you'll follow their practical advice regarding which foods to eat and other tips to help you transition more comfortably. By the time you receive your permanent denture, you’ll already be accustomed to wearing a prosthesis.
